June 2021
We were honored to have created and chaired the SpringSpirit Slugging Statistics® camp recently held over a three-day span from June 1–3, 2021 at the SpringSpirit Youth Sports and Education Complex and at Rice University. Thank you for your inspiring, continued support. We would be remiss if we did not thank all of our friends, sponsors, and volunteers and their tangible contribution. As a result of your largesse and our community’s commitment, our 2021 camp was a formidable success. Below are some of our most poignant images. (More available upon request.) We look forward to our August 20th Astros outing and providing our campers a certificate of completion and other goodies for their enthusiastic interest and commensurate efforts toward leadership, sports, and STEM! With gratitude and warm regards, Sofia Adrogué Sten Gustafson Stefan Adrogué Gustafson Founder & Chair Founder & Chair Founder & Chair Kimberly Martin Scott D. Martin Scott D. Martin, Jr. Co-Chair Co-Chair Co-Chair June 2020 Greetings. In the midst of such turbulent times, we wanted to share a bit of encouraging news with you regarding our Slugging Statistics® camp. Although we had to postpone our usual June camp offering due to COVID-19, we have not delayed our desire to serve and encourage the SpringSpirit community. Over the past two weeks, we've hosted two successful events for SpringSpirit participants. Both events were designed to make the best of and respect the current social distance recommendations while still providing a direct impact to the community. On June 9, we hosted a SpringSpirit Slugging Statistics® Drive-by. SpringSpirit families were invited to drive up to SpringSpirit to enjoy a series of drive-through stations full of giveaways and excitement. Over one hundred children and their families came through our Drive-by stations where they were greeted by balloons and a DJ, received a pizza dinner and dessert, and collected a Slugging Statistics® water bottle and drawstring bag for use at our future camp. Inside each drawstring bag was a baseball statistics worksheet and an invitation to join a future Zoom call. This event was especially significant as it was the first time many participants had been inside the gates of SpringSpirit since the spread of COVID-19. It also happened to serve as an unofficial "Welcome Back" party for the SpringSpirit community, as baseball and softball teams were allowed to start back with limited practice at SpringSpirit that same week. We were thrilled to be a part of such a happy time! With their Slugging Statistics® worksheet in hand, SpringSpirit participants were invited to a Slugging Statistics® Zoom call on June 15. During the call, hosted by Stefan and Scott, the group discussed baseball and softball statistics, life during COVID-19, and baseball trivia. They also reviewed the answers to the Slugging Statistics® worksheet that was distributed at the Slugging Statistics® Drive-by and were able to view two personalized video messages of encouragement from Houston Astro Lance McCullers Jr. and Baby Jay, a local Houston rap artist and motivational speaker. We are so grateful to these two men for taking the time to record greetings for our SpringSpirit youth. It truly was a special treat! Going forward, SpringSpirit is in the process of cautiously reopening some of its in-person programming while ensuring that all appropriate health and sanitization guidelines are followed. As of June 8, baseball and softball teams have begun to practice again. Beginning in July, some limited, in-person educational programming will begin. Though things are far from normal, the SpringSpirit community is excited to begin to be together again. We still look forward to the Fall when we plan to build on the momentum of the Drive-by and Zoom call to host a re-envisioned SpringSpirit Slugging Statistics® camp. We will provide you with details as they are finalized. We wish to reiterate our gratitude for your generous support of Slugging Statistics® and the educational programs at SpringSpirit. Your generosity provides vital funds to equip these motivated and engaged children for success now more than ever, and we could not be more appreciative. Please enjoy the attached photos of our Slugging Statistics® events from the last two weeks. Continued success with all endeavors during these trying times.
